Government College University (GCU) Lahore has announced the establishment of a Department of Agriculture on its New Campus, which will offer a variety of degree programs, including BS, MS, and PhD programs, in the fields of Agronomy, Horticulture, Soil Science, Plant Breeding and Genetics, Plant Pathology, and Food Science & Technology.
GCU Vice-Chancellor Prof Dr. Asghar Zaidi stated that the department, which was authorized by the University’s Academic Council and Syndicate, intended to modernize Pakistan’s agriculture sector. He emphasized agriculture’s significance in sustaining life and the economy. As well as the need for sustainable agriculture, practices to address issues such as low productivity and climate change.
“Agriculture is the primary source of food and raw materials for a wide range of industrie. Which including textiles, pharmaceuticals, and biofuels.” Pakistan is an agricultural nation, with agriculture accounting for a sizable portion of the country’s GDP and employing a sizable portion of the workforce. However, the sector confronts a number of challenges. Including low crop and livestock productivity, poor soil quality, and the effects of climate change. As a result, investing in agricultural education and study is critical for Pakistan’s prosperous and sustainable future,” Prof. Zaidi stated.
Dr. Hafiz Haider has been named the first chairperson of the GCU Department of Agriculture. The department’s principal goal, according to the Vice-Chancellor, is to develop and apply sustainable agriculture practices. Can reduce the use of water, fertilizer, and pesticides while yet providing high yields of healthy crops. In addition, the department will educate and teach farmers, students, and extension workers in order to improve farming practices and promote sustainable agriculture.
“The department aims to contribute to agricultural development, food security, and rural development by conducting research and extension activities, developing and implementing agricultural policies, and promoting sustainable land and water management practices, natural resource conservation, and biodiversity conservation,” said Prof Zaidi.
Graduates of agriculture programs can help Pakistan’s agriculture sector by increasing crop yields, improving farming techniques, and promoting sustainable agriculture.
